Growing up in Denmark came with a disadvantage when it came to watching TV! There was only ONE channel (and there was nothing broadcasted during a normal week day at all!) I decided to expand my options by watching a lot of Swedish TV which I could access and that added 2 more channels to the lineup!
I would watch a show or movie in its original language, which was usually English and there would then be Swedish subtitles on the bottom of the screen. If you have ever watched anything with subtitles on the screen you know that you can't help but follow along with the writing. If you do this enough you can actually start picking up another language in simple form.
This is how I learned a lot of Swedish! Now, Swedish is not that far removed from Danish but there are many words that are completely different and people from Denmark and Sweden can find it very hard to understand each other.
Of course this is a long term process and not going to bring results overnight.
Did you know that you can often change the language or turn on Subtitles to DVDs when you watch them? I tell my students all the time to try to watch one of their favorite movies in another language or add the subtitles. You should give it a try too ;-)
